Atom Films was established in 2007 by Aileen O’Carroll and Alex Fegan with a view to making original feature films and documentaries.
Our most recent film, Older Than Ireland (2015), directed by Alex Fegan, was the highest grossing Irish documentary of all time in terms of domestic and international box office. The film, which was co-produced by Snackbox Films, was released threatrcially in Ireland and the UK by Element Pictures Distribution. It also played theatrically in over 25 cities in the US and Canada where it received critical and commercial success. The film won Best Documentary at the Galway Film Fleadh (2015), The Irish Times Ticket Awards (2015) as well winning the Director’s Choice Award at the Boston Irish Film Festival (2016). It was also nominated for an Irish Film and Television Award, 2016.
The Irish Pub (2013), directed by Alex Fegan and produced by Aileen O’Carroll, was also released by Element Pictures Distribution in Ireland and the UK. The film was subsequently released in the US/Canada in Landmark Theatres and Rainbow Cinemas respectively where it received critical acclaim. It also sold to various TV channels including RTE, Foxtel, The History Channel, PBS as well as various airlines including Aer Lingus and Emirates. In 2016, it was released on Netflix USA/Canada/Australia/New Zealand where it made the coveted ‘Popular on Netflix’ section.
Alex also directed the award-winning sci-fi feature Man Made Men (2010), starring Rory Doherty and Ronan Wilmot (In the Name of the Father), which premiered at the Galway Film Fleadh and won Best Foreign Feature at the Arizona International Film Festival. In 2012, Alex directed the award-winning short film The Court Astronomer (2012) starring John Kavanagh (Braveheart). He also produced the award-winning short Zephra (2013) starring Sam Keeley (Burnt, Monster’s Dark Continent) and Michael Power (Game of Thrones), which was directed by Bob Gallagher.
Alex has been nominated for The Rising Star Award at the Irish Film and Television Awards, 2016 as well as nominated for the Bingham Ray New Talent Award at the Galway Film Fleadh, 2015.
Both Aileen and Alex are qualified lawyers.
